About a year ago, I ran into one of my shyest, most introverted friends whom I haven’t seen in a long time. As we were catching up, she took a swift look at her phone, noted the time and paused for a second. I think she knew she was about to make my day. She invited me to join her for a pole fitness lesson. “Just for fun,” she said.
Twenty-four hours later, I was so in love, and in so much pain. This turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences in my life.
And now, as I’m getting ready for one of my first performances at our pole studio, I wanted to share why I not only started but stuck with pole fitness. In case you need a surprise of your own, or a change of pace – this could be exactly what you are looking for!
Feel Better, Look Better
If you’re an active person like me, your first encounter with a typical beginner pole dancing lesson might look like a harmless jogging session – refreshing and not too tiring. All the positive vibes, great music, step-by-step explanations and gradual increase of intensity will end up masking just how tough this sport can be.
Pole dancing can give your whole body so much soreness you’ll end up feeling muscles you never knew you had! And I mean that in the best possible way, it was a nice change from my gym sessions.
Pole fitness is, in its essence, like combining a hardcore cardio routine with weightlifting supersets and yoga asanas. It helps you burn tons of calories, making you stronger, fitter, more flexible and energetic! But most importantly, the skills you master will practically alter your whole outlook on life.
Imagine the level of confidence you can build just by working out regularly, let alone the psychological elements of getting more comfortable with your physique, and enjoying all the amazing stunts you can do.
Being playful, improvising and spending time in a pleasant environment will do wonders for your self-esteem and mental health.
Overcome Your Limitations
I’m not a big fan of temporary solutions, so if pole classes hadn’t turned out to be an actual game-changer in my life, I would have moved on to something different.
In all fairness, not everyone will find themselves thrilled at the notion of spinning around a pole to music. However, if like me you do like trying new things, giving pole dancing a chance. It lead me to a challenging spot in life, for which I’ll always be grateful.
Whether you’re a few months away from your desired weight, doing the splits, or maybe years away from dealing with your inner conflicts, pole dancing can be the perfect remedy for your soul.
It’s unconventional, empowering, sensual, expressive, and demanding in many ways. Whatever your boundaries are, pole dancing will find them, test them and push them. And while many things in life aren’t transferable, this experience will help you express your strengths and love your flaws.
Create Your Oasis
I’ve tried to find the ideal stress-relieving method for the longest time. Starting with DIY creative sessions, all the way to many hours’ worth of taekwondo per week.
It was only several months into pole dancing classes that I realized I stopped searching. I didn’t even notice that I found my go-to haven of peace.
Doing something fulfilling for my body and my soul while surrounded with like-minded people was my dose of happiness. Also, it helped me forget about my everyday work and personal troubles.
Moreover, the classes never let me run away from the causes of my stress. Pole fitness pushes me into my most uncomfortable thoughts only to help me find the way to conquer them. In its own, unique way, pole dancing has become one of the most exciting segments of my life. Always reminding me of all the ways I can grow.
